I rode a motorbike in london for 3 weeks and had to stop
due to asthma. Each day throughout the period my breathing worsened untill i had to give up. Whatever is in traffic pollution it was deffinatly the cause of my heavy chest and breathing difficulties.

Activated carbon – Nature's way to protect us - from ourselves

Urban living offers comfort and convenience – along with health risks.

Science has proven an undeniable link between air pollution and disease. As air quality decreases, cancer, asthma, birth defects, and a multitude of other diseases increase.

The act of breathing supplies our bodies with life-giving oxygen. The math is simple: an average breath contains 600 ml of air, and we breathe 12-16 times each minute. Thus, our lungs process about 14,000 liters of air every day!

But each breath can also expose us to millions of pollutants, bacteria, viruses, and toxins. The human body was designed with built-in protection; yet, in modern urban environments such as Bangkok (one of the world’s most polluted cities), our natural defenses are easily overwhelmed.

If I saw someone wearing a mask like that while riding their bikes in the city, my first thought would be. "why are they wearing it." I wouldn't immediately think it's because of the pollution. I see how it can cause people to think, but honestly, my first thought would be, "What the hell is he wearing?"

How's the mask you're wearing doing? Is it effective in blocking out the fumes and how comfortable is it?

Dawson, the middle classes bought into the Levittown and Big 3 automakers style of consumerism and without that, your overclass would have no hold on them. Land-use regularion, property taxation and most importantly the freedom that an American landowner has to do what they wish with property encouraged suburban sprawl and that has made us dependent on the infernal combustion engine. You probably have to give up living in a low-density suburb, and find a way to live within biking radius of your means of support, to break that addiction.

Hi Patrick - Good luck with your resolution!

I however won't be joining you. A face-mask will hide my facial expressions - which vary from Joy to Rage - in my daily riding; I'm keen to share them with my fellow road users, be they pedestrians, riders or drivers.
As far as driving through the fug of Alexandra Parade or Hoddle Street, I only use them when I have to and like to show the poor bastards stuck in their steel and glass boxes that I can go faster (and happier) than them.
Happily, Melbourne is changing for the better; hopefully the world is changing fast enough! There are more cyclists now than at any other time in my life, more people using public transport, car traffic is stuffed, and the Green vote is increasing.
I don't reckon wearing a face mask will help to change the opinions of the dinosaurs drinking their coffee, applying their make-up, texting and calling on their smart phones, smoking their gaspers - natural selection will sort them out.

Cheers matey,

The root of auto-addiction is capitalism. It's the overclass that are the ones who couldn't live without selling millions of news cars every year. Hence, the topic is verboten.

We activists need to stop blaming the masses for this. We are the takers, not the makers.
