The cycle helmet is an evolutionary dead end, it kills everyday cycling, just look at Australia, then look at the Netherlands or Denmark, and you will see what I mean…
I am shocked by the helmets in this supposedly carbusting drawing, not only on the hero, who might have been making such a compromise to his freedom as he cycled in a car-dominated society, but there are no cars or other hazards (steep hills, unploughed snow or ice etc) in the drawing depicting a future carfree society.
I travel to Amsterdam every year at least, for work, and practically nobody there wears the damned things, except a few tourists.
The Melbourne cycleshare scheme is an utter failure, unlike ours in Montréal, its ancestors in Paris and Lyon, and many other successes in different countries. Cycle helmets are a lucrative market, and a scaremongering road to profit, promoting “gear” and killing everyday cycling in normal clothing as the carcentric blame the victims.
I want to point out “the drawing” in my comment refers to Andy Singer’s current cartoon “Monument to a Future Hero” which appears on the Carbusters’ homepage.
But now I can see the original cartoon. Evolution of the veil, the chastity belt, the wig worn by Chassidic women, footbinding torture shoes (or extreme high heels in the West!) or any other oppressive garment would be just as excruciating.
